What is Organic (BIO) food?

Organic (or BIO) food can be any kind of foodstuff that was produced on farmland or agricultural land where no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, etc. have been used during the previously fixed timespan according to agricultural regulations about this. This means that organic foods come from areas that have been certified and which are regularly controlled to make sure that organic regulations are upheld.
This though can also mean that organic food can be foodstuffs that are not so favourable to health (e.g. lard, butter and similar products can also be produced in an organic way.)

From July 1st, 2010 there are new European Union rules in place concerning organic foods. The packaging of organic foods produced in the European Union must carry the new organic logo on it – 12 stars in a leaf-shape with a light green background.

This though does not mean that national, regional or private logos for organic food are no longer valid. In the Czech Republic this logo is known as the „Biozebra“. In theory our "biozebra" fulfils the same purpose as the European logo.

BIOUsage of the „biozebry“ – the logo presently used to mark organic food products on our local market – will be one of the problems caused by the new legislation covering ecological agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture and producers of organic foods are presently thinking about how to distinguish the meaning of both these logos.

In the future it may be that the „biozebra“ would only be stated on locally produced organic food products. This has been suggested by the Organic Food Chambers of the Czech Republic as well as some organic organizations. The problem is though that according to European Union rules it is not possible to use a state logo only for locally prodcued organic food products as this would be seen as limiting the internal market of the European Union.
